Christmas deepens our appreciation that Jesus Christ is everything we need. Life is complicated. Yet Jesus is our anchor point for truth, love, rich perspectives and a hope-filled life.

We’re a musical family. So the sounds of Christmas are filling our home from the electronic devices to the strings and keys of our own instruments.

Just the other day we convinced my mom to demonstrate a bellows shake on the accordion she played in middle school. It was impressive to see my amazing 83 year old mom navigate the tricky and heavy instrument she hadn’t played in decades. We had so much fun reminiscing and relearning its fascinating mechanics!

I love how melodies and lyrics, especially at Christmas, refresh our minds and hearts on Jesus. Songs let me soak in the treasure of Jesus is in the midst of all the bustle.

I was at the piano with Carly a couple of weeks ago, appreciating that she was willing to stay put and enjoy it with me longer than usual. In those calm and cozy moments of reflection together, God encouraged me with a personal message by inserting one new word into an old familiar song. The word was “caregiver.”

Just as I felt cared for and encouraged that night, I want to share the verse now with a prayer that God blesses you too.

God bless you, merry caregiver!

Let nothing you dismay.

For Jesus Christ our Savior
Was born on Christmas Day
To save us all from Satan’s pow’r
When we were gone astray
O tidings of comfort and joy
Comfort and joy

O tidings of comfort and joy!

Let those words and the minor key float over your soul for a moment.

Minor chords are often associated with emotions like sadness, fear, mystery and longing. But the unique harmonic of a minor chord is also beautifully complex. Like the caregiving life, it can evoke a wide and rich variety of important emotions, even a sense of serenity that can result from giving a broad range of thoughts and feelings a chance to breathe.

Friends, whatever nostalgia you experience, whatever melancholy you feel today, whatever concern you have about the future, let nothing bring dismay!

Our hope and future is all Jesus. That is our perfect, complete and certain hope for today — and for every tomorrow. God’s mercy is new every single morning. Because of this hope that Jesus brings, you can start seeing the results in your life, even today.

Joy to the world because the Lord has come — and He’ll be coming again! What tidings of comfort and joy that brings!
